Job Description

This is an interim position for the remainder of the 18/19 SY.

JOB SUMMARY

The behavior interventionist is a certified teacher who works specifically with K-8 students who have a need to improve their behavior in order to focus more clearly on academic instruction. The focus of the behavior interventionist is to work with students to develop effective learning behaviors and appropriate interactions with teachers and classmates. The goal of the interventionist is to ensure that students manage their behavior in order to be able to focus and become more successful academically.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Professional Knowledge

  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of Scientifically Based Behavior Research (SBRR) specifically related to K-8 students.
  • Understands the purpose and components of PBIS and Character Counts
  • Understands how to collaboratively work with K-8 staff to effectively improve students’ behavior to in turn improve students’ academic abilities.

Instructional Practice

  • Provide effective student behavior improvement sessions
  • Continuously monitor behavioral and academic progress of students receiving behavioral services, in order to adjust practices and student grouping.
  • Communicate and collaborate with classroom teachers regarding students’ behavioral and academic improvement.
  • Use technology for planning instruction and assessment analysis

Professional Responsibilities

  • Attend district and school site sponsored trainings
  • Support the site level School Wide Plan through facilitation and/or participation at in-services, grade level team
         meetings, and staff meetings.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, coaches, and contracted consultants.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

No direct supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

The successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Master’s Degree preferred
  • Arizona Teaching Certificate
  • Experience teaching K-8 students (three to five years of experience preferred)
  • Experience working with behavior intervention programs
  • A proven track record of having a positive effect on diverse learners, including English Language Learners and Special Education students

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships, and work cooperatively with students, peers, and parents.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Governing Board policies.
  • Ability to function effectively as part of the special education team.
  • Ability to write objective, articulate reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with parents, students, and staff.
  • Spanish bilingual preferred.
  • Experience with Synergy preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to walk and use fingers, tools, or controls.  The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and depth perception.  Occasionally the employee will lift up to 10 lbs. such as to lift files and paper.
